Jon Burleigh

I’ve been playing and working on the water for over 20 years. My career as a rescue boat training instructor and lifeboat coxswain, grew from slalom kayak competition and expedition guiding to messing around in boats as a kid. It has given me opportunities to work with a range of international lifeboat organisations, specialist military, police and international oil companies. Work in Antarctica with the British Antarctic Survey, followed by over 1200 miles sea kayaking round Iceland during the summer of 2003 developed a need to work for myself and continue to build a career in maritime, longshore and SAR (search and rescue) environments. I now work as a winchman on a SAR helicopter in the north sea, but with an equal time rosta I am able to continue to work and play on the water during my time home. To view my CV click here.

“Realise your capabilities.
Know your limitations.
Understand and enjoy your tools of work;
People and the environment you are in.”

(Old quotation from a whaling skipper)
“Being on the water is about as close to working with nature as I can get. It gives me a huge feeling of peace with the environment I’m working in and continues to build my skills as a waterman.

To me, this is far more than just paddling a kayak or sailing a boat, it’s a sound knowledge of the sea and being comfortable in that environment. Beyond that, I do these things because I can, because it’s there for anyone to do and because, in journeying on the water you see the smallest detail against the biggest view.”
